Feminism is the movement for equal rights and opportunities for both males and females. In my Family Values class we read about the history of feminism and new feminist ideas, as well as an anti-feminist book. We discussed family issues revolving around women’s rights such as the mommy wars, traditional gender roles, and feminist ideas from philosophers and more modern authors. I started realizing more and more how much I agreed with the topics we were talking about. Equality has been a big issue for me since I started college; I’ve really felt compelled to fight for it. Dr. Wright, the professor of my Family Values class, is a Political Science professor and she’s also the head of the Women’s Studies department, which explains why she is so knowledgeable about feminism. Dr. Wright has influenced me to be more active in the fight for women’s rights. My Sociology professor, Dr. Nibert, is also an influence for me to get involved with equal rights because we discussed sexism, racism, speciesism, heterosexism, etc. in his class. I have come to realize how important the impact of nature, society, gender roles, and sexism has on individuals.
